U.S. MORTGAGE RATES SURGE TO 7.40%, PUTTING FRESH PRESSURE ON HOMEBUYERS

U.S. mortgage rates have climbed sharply, creating fresh affordability challenges for American homebuyers. According to Freddie Mac, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate reached 7.40% on October 8, 2026, rising from 7.28% the previous week. The increase marks the highest level since November 2023, as elevated Treasury yields and persistent inflation concerns continue to influence borrowing costs.

Higher mortgage rates are making monthly home loan payments more expensive, forcing many potential buyers to reconsider their purchasing plans. Existing homeowners with lower-rate mortgages may also hesitate to sell, limiting housing availability. With home prices remaining elevated, the U.S. housing market faces continued pressure as buyers and investors closely monitor inflation, Federal Reserve policy and future interest-rate movements.
