Wall Street on Edge as Federal Reserve Rate Decision Looms Amid Inflation and Oil-Price Pressures

U.S. financial markets entered Wednesday’s session cautiously as investors awaited the Federal Reserve’s highly anticipated September monetary-policy decision, scheduled for 2:00 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time on September 16, following the central bank’s two-day meeting.  Wall Street futures edged slightly higher after two consecutive sessions of declines, but uncertainty remained elevated as traders weighed persistent inflation, high Treasury yields and geopolitical risks affecting energy markets. Market pricing indicated that investors were heavily anticipating a 25-basis-point interest-rate increase, which would mark the Fed’s first rate hike since 2023, after recent inflation data strengthened the case for tighter monetary policy.  The backdrop has become particularly challenging because higher borrowing costs can pressure equity valuations and corporate financing while elevated energy prices can add to inflationary pressures; Brent crude remained around $108 a barrel on Wednesday even after easing as additional Saudi supply and higher U.S. inventories provided some relief.  Investors are therefore focused not only on the immediate rate decision but also on the Federal Reserve’s accompanying guidance and Chair Kevin Warsh’s press conference for clues about the future path of monetary policy. With bond yields, inflation, oil prices and geopolitical developments pulling markets in different directions, the Fed’s communication could become a major catalyst for stocks, bonds, currencies and commodities in the sessions ahead.
