Gold Prices Under Pressure as Rate-Hike Bets Strengthen and the US Dollar Firms

Gold prices came under renewed pressure as expectations of tighter U.S. monetary policy strengthened, while a firmer U.S. dollar and elevated Treasury yields reduced the appeal of the precious metal. On Thursday, spot gold declined by more than 1% after U.S. producer-price data and rising energy costs increased concerns that inflation could remain persistent. Market participants subsequently raised their expectations of a Federal Reserve interest-rate hike at its upcoming policy meeting. According to market pricing cited by Reuters, the probability of a rate increase rose to around 67%, compared with about 62% before the latest inflation-related data.
The relationship between gold and interest rates is particularly important for investors. Gold does not generate regular interest income, unlike bonds and other interest-bearing assets. Therefore, when investors expect interest rates and government bond yields to rise, the opportunity cost of holding gold can increase. This can encourage some investors to move toward yield-generating assets, putting downward pressure on bullion prices.
The U.S. dollar is another major factor influencing the global gold market. Since gold is primarily priced in dollars, a stronger greenback can make the metal more expensive for buyers using other currencies. Recent movements in the dollar and U.S. Treasury yields have therefore added another layer of pressure on gold.

Energy prices are also playing an important role in the current market environment. Higher crude-oil prices can increase inflationary pressure, potentially making central banks more cautious about cutting rates or more willing to maintain restrictive monetary policy. This combination of higher oil prices, inflation concerns, rising yields and a firmer dollar has created a challenging short-term environment for gold.

Despite the recent decline, gold continues to attract attention as a traditional store of value and a hedge against economic and geopolitical uncertainty. On Friday, spot gold recovered around 0.7% to approximately $4,346 per ounce, although it remained on track for a weekly decline. Investors were closely watching U.S. consumer inflation data for additional clues about the Federal Reserve's next policy decision.
For Indian investors and jewellery buyers, international gold movements are important, but domestic prices can also be affected by the rupee-dollar exchange rate, import-related costs, local demand and taxes. Recent volatility has reportedly kept physical gold demand relatively subdued in India, while investment interest in other major Asian markets has remained comparatively stronger.
The immediate direction of gold is therefore likely to remain closely linked to U.S. inflation figures, Federal Reserve expectations, Treasury yields, the dollar and global energy prices. If rate-hike expectations continue to strengthen, gold could face further short-term pressure. On the other hand, any moderation in inflation or a reversal in the dollar and bond yields could provide fresh support to bullion.
